The gala dinner

The Merano WineFestival Gala Dinner 2026 opens one of the most prestigious events on the Italian and international food and wine scene. An evening dedicated to excellence, hospitality and the culture of wine, bringing together exceptional guests, VIPs, journalists, buyers and leading names in gastronomy and wine.

The evening will be enriched by the award ceremony for The WineHunter Stars 2026 and by an exclusive culinary journey created in collaboration with Teritoria, with five chefs taking part.

Italian cuisine becomes a journey through five territories and five different interpretations of contemporary Italy: from Lunigiana, the border country between Tuscany and Liguria, to the lands of the Po and the Bassa Parmense in Emilia; from the hills of Piedmont to the mountains of Abruzzo, and on to the Alpine world of Trentino.

Each chef brings to the table a landscape, a memory, a culture and a personal vision of Italian cuisine. Together, they tell of an Italy deeply rooted in its origins yet able to evolve; respectful of tradition, yet open to innovation.

Teritoria is a brand of the Logis Hôtels group, the European leader in independent, non-standardised hotel hospitality.

Born in Guardiagrele in 1985, he grew up at the stoves of the family trattoria, Villa Maiella, holder of a Michelin star since 2009. After studying food science, in 2009 he founded his own farm to give the kitchen a short supply chain and first-rate produce. Three years as chef de partie with Michel Bras in Laguiole refined his technique and creativity. Today he leads the kitchen of Villa Maiella with a philosophy that joins memory, territory and innovation: the most genuine Abruzzo, told on the plate.

Born in Polesine Parmense in 1958, he learned to cook beside his aunt Emilia. A teacher at the Salsomaggiore hotel school at just 22, he has taken Italian cuisine to many countries, working even with Prince Charles. One of the leading figures in protecting Culatello di Zibello PDO, since 2010 he has expressed his “gastrofluvial” cooking at Antica Corte Pallavicina, bound to the Po and its produce: a Michelin star since 2011. Commendatore of the Italian Republic, and since 2019 mayor of Polesine Zibello.

Raised in Sarzana, in Lunigiana — the border country between Liguria, Tuscany and Emilia — he trained at Angelo Paracucchi’s Locanda dell’Angelo. For almost eighteen years he cooked at 2,400 metres, at the Baita Belvedere in Champoluc, then came home: with Gianmarco Ferrandi he founded Officine del Cibo (among Italy’s 50 Top Pizza) and turned a seventeenth-century farmhouse in Fosdinovo into Locanda De Banchieri, with its own estate. The Michelin Guide 2025 awarded it a star: a cuisine of the borderland, between land and sea.

A languages graduate, an interpreter, a near-Serie A basketball player: cooking came later, and became a vocation. After years of high-end catering — from the Turin Book Fair to lunches for Napolitano and Gorbachev — in 2016 she opened the restaurant that bears her name in a deconsecrated sixteenth-century church in the heart of Tortona. Her elegant, intuitive cooking has grown alongside Derthona, the Timorasso of the Colli Tortonesi; beside her, her husband Enrico has built a wine list that has become a cult address.

Sarah, from Milan, grew up among rare pigments and artists’ colours; in 2010 she chose the kitchen, in the school of Massimiliano Aresi, a pupil of Gualtiero Marchesi, and in 2019 opened Frosch in Varena, in the Val di Fiemme. Fabrizio trained with Marchesi at L’Albereta, where he became head chef in 2004 after Paris, Rome and Cannes; at La Speranzina in Sirmione he won a Michelin star in 2021. Since 2024 they have run Frosch together: elegance, precision and a fine balance between tradition and innovation.

The evening’s programme

Elegance is an Art.Beauty is an Emotion.Wine and Gastronomy is its Expression.

“Elegance is an Art” grows from the idea that elegance is not merely a matter of appearance but a true art form: it shows in the beauty of the Kurhaus, the harmony of music, the creativity of the kitchen, the refinement of wine and of fine regional food, the personality of people – and in the ability to move us without ever seeking the spotlight.

  1. Red carpet and welcome

The Kurhaus opens its doors: from the red carpet and the cloakroom up to the Rotunde on the first floor, where the welcome is raised to the sound of the piano with a flute of Asprinio d’Aversa, Campanian buffalo mozzarella and caviar. In the “Portrait of Elegance” corner, an artist’s portrait of you at the gala.

  2. The Kursaal opens

Guests are shown to their tables to Viennese waltzes, while Merano, its mountains and its vineyards pass across the big screen.

  3. Welcome

The hosts, Sonja Leonardi and Maurizio Di Maggio, open the evening with Helmuth Köcher, followed by the institutional greetings.

  4. The Five Expressions of Elegance

Helmuth Köcher presents the collaboration with Teritoria and the five expressions of elegance that give the courses their names: Purity, Territory, Harmony, Character, Beauty.

  5. “The Birth of Beauty”

Sherrita Duran sings “Once Upon a Time in the West” and fashion enters the hall: the creations of Baronessa Margherita de Cles, creative director of La Cles Atelier, Fiorella Ciaboco for Vegea and Runggaldier walk between the tables to the stage, with jewellery by Estefania Monti and bags by Maria Luisa Craia. On stage, the designers.

  6. Dinner is served

From here the service is continuous: the courses keep coming to the table one after another, while music and awards take turns on stage. It begins with the amuse-bouche “Purity” and the starter “Territory”, each with its wine.

  7. Music and The WineHunter Stars

Anjes Cobo, voice and piano, sings “La notte”; then the first The WineHunter Stars awards and Sherrita Duran with “Proud Mary”. At the table, the first and the main course.

  8. The WineHunter Stars, part two

The remaining awards; a short film, “Un pozzo per la vita”, introduced by Helmuth Köcher; and Sherrita Duran with “Feeling Good”.

  9. The 500 Glasses

The service of the 500 glasses for the Celebration dedicated to Elegance: Sangue d’Oro, a Passito di Pantelleria presented by Helmuth Köcher; then Anna Ghisolfi’s dessert “Beauty”.

  10. Grand finale

Everyone who made the evening on stage, from the chefs to the service, from the models to the designers, with the voices of Anjes Cobo and Sherrita Duran.

  11. DJ Music in the Rotunde

The evening carries on in the Rotunde: DJ Music, paired with the WineHunter Award spirits and coffee.
